It Was Good.

Friday night C and I went to see The Hunger Games. He liked it, and so did I. I'm glad I didn't read the book again because I would have gotten hung up on the minor details. You know, like the cat that wasn't really orange.

I'm glad we went and waited in line for an hour and a half to get a seat. I'm also glad I bought the tickets days before because all of the shows were sold out. We had fun. This was probably the last Friday night date night for a while because C is going back to working nights in a couple of weeks. Yuck. I know that's what he prefers though so I can't complain.

The only thing I'll say about the movie that I didn't care for, was the fact that they didn't really build much on Gale's character. Throughout all three books I liked him over Peeta (oh, yes I did), so I'm not sure why they didn't go more into depth with that character. I wouldn't have minded a three hour movie!

It was worth it. I may have been so excited after the movie was over that I told C a little to much about the second and third books and he got irritated with me. I just wanted someone to talk to about it who had read the books dammit!

Speaking of books turned movies, we saw the preview for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. That's the book that C was reading (see I told you he used to read!) while I was reading The Hunger Games. I remember him reading me snippets of the book but when I asked him what it was about and how it ended (that's how I roll) I guessed it before he even told me.

Apparently I'm awesome.

Book vs. Movie

I never jumped on the Twilight or Harry Potter bandwagons. In fact, I made fun of the people who did. There, I said it. And if you know me IRL at all, you know this is true.

I typically always read any book before the movie comes out. If I see the movie first, I won't read the book. I guess I think of the book as the "original".

I can't really think of any book/movie combo that has really matched up for me and been exceedingly awesome. The movie, My Sister's Keeper was awful. The Time Traveller's Wife didn't go enough in depth. P.S. I Love You was the closest I remember coming to being satisfied with the book compared to the movie.

Basically, I always prefer the book over the movie.

Where I'm going with this is that I'm tired of being asked about my love of Harry Potter or Twilight, or whatever, whenever someone finds out that I. Can't. Wait. to see The Hunger Games. I read the books a couple of summers ago when I was first told about them. I thought about re-reading them this week because I have forgotten minor details. But then I told myself NO! DON'T!

If I would have read the books again, I'd probably get all hung up on the discrepancies between the book/movie. So, I'm going into this with a fuzzy memory of what'll happen. I remember enjoying the books so much that I finished the first one in three hours. I couldn't put it down. I hope the movie delivers.

I hate to think of what they might turn this into. You know, a group of teen girls screaming over the hotness of the guys in the movie or whatever. Think, Twilight. All that hype. That annoys the shit out of me. That's not what this is about. I haven't really gotten that feeling yet, so maybe those annoying kids won't ruin it for me. For the record, I never read any of the Twilight or Harry Potter books. So not my thing.

I never could get C to read The Hunger Games books. He's too wrapped up in his electronics (iPad, iPhone, laptop) and cartoons (Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad) to read an actual book. And yes, sometimes I wonder if he's 13. Let it be known that he used to read all the time.

It's all good though, at least he doesn't have any expectations. I know he'll like the movie if it's anything like the book because it's something right up his alley. In fact, when we first saw the trailer, he turned to me and said, "That's something that you actually read? Doesn't look like you're kind of thing." Thanks, honey.

I bought our tickets at the beginning of the week. Is it 9:30 on Friday evening yet?

Oh The Horror!

It's mid October and I figure this is a fitting subject right now. Chris and I were talking earlier about movies that used to scare the youknowwhat out of us. His short list of tear inducers? Dumbo* and Alice in Wonderland.

Growing up, my parents didn't really care what we watched on TV. I don't remember watching movies with my dad much, but my mom, aunt, and even my grandma made me sit through a few doozies. Now that I'm older I realize some of these movies weren't even meant to be scary...but the things I remember about them make me never want to watch them again. Here's my list of the movies I remember that scared the crap outta me-

Tremors- Clearly I was four years old when this movie came out but I remember clearly the night my grandma and I watched it. Hello?! Underground creatures with massive teeth who popped up and ate people. My grandma isn't the type to watch this kind of movie, much less have me in the room watching it with her! I didn't know then that it was also sort of a comedy. Who knows how long I tip-toed around after watching this one.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs- The magic mirror creeped me out. Thank goodness talking mirrors don't really exist. The seven dwarfs were pretty cute, I vaguely remember that...but that is the only positive thing I can think of. Whoever used to turn this movie on while I was resting for nap time when I was little must have been trying to scar me for life. Apples aren't my favorite fruit. I could list many Disney movies that I didn't like but if I could only choose one, this would be it.

Young Frankenstein- Everyone knows this movie is a comedy. Everyone but me. This was one of my mom's favorite movies, when we would watch it she would laugh so hard. Now that she's gone, my uncle, Nick, most recently tried to make me watch it. It's not even the "monster" that's scary to me. It's Igor. With his crazy eyes. And his hunchback. Ohmygosh. Then there's Frau Blücher, every time someone in the house mentions her name, the horses outside neigh in terror. It's in black and white and my silly self tells me that that means the movie is even scarier. "Put the candle back."

The Rocky Horror Picture Show- Can I just say this is not a movie for kids. Like at all. But every Halloween up until my mom died, you could guarantee this movie would be playing somewhere in the house. Once again, it's a comedy. Are you seeing a trend here? I'm a wuss. This movie isn't scary (it's a musical for goodness sake!), I mostly remember being creeped out by the men dressing as women. And the make-up. I do have to say that the songs are catchy and I could probably recite any of them if you asked me to. I guess that's what happens when you watch it, but you aren't really watching it.

Salem's Lot- This movie is not a comedy. It is easily the scariest movie (to me) I've listed. It's got creepy vampires who scratch on the bedroom windows at night wanting to be let in. It's not scary because it's full of gore, what makes it creepy to me is the way the story is told. It was made in the 70's and they did a good enough job on the "scare factor" for me. Poltergeist ain't got nothin' on this one. Oh and the ending...right before the credits? Yeah, it's nightmare inducing.

Beetle Juice- Comedy. Again. Ghosts trying to scare people out of their house. I guess when I was younger, just looking at Beetlejuice was creepy enough. Then I remember something about a front door that was up really high and if you walked out of it you'd just fall...

Arachnophobia- Let me end this list with another comedy that I thought was scary. I haven't tried watching this one recently, and I have a feeling it might be kindasortafunny now...but it's not worth the spider-filled nightmares. The scene I remember most vivdly was the spider crawling on the toilet. Yeah. I don't like spiders to begin with. Maybe this movie is one of the reasons why?

I think when I was younger I just wasn't mature enough to appreciate dark comedy...since most of these are comedies and not horror films. I'm sure there are even more movies I didn't list on here that used to creep me out.

I just asked Chris if we would monitor what movies our kids watched...he basically said yes.

Which movies used to scare you when you were younger?

Up In The Air

A while back, we watched Up in the Air. Honestly, I had no idea what the movie was about, but we rented it anyway.
It had a mix of the things Chris and I like in a movie. It was funny, but also had serious parts among other things. I can't say George Clooney is one of my favorite actors, but I liked him in this one.

There were twists in the movie that I never saw coming. I've talked to people who have seen it and had it all figured out, but we didn't! I didn't know it was based on a novel by Walter Kirn, but I'll be reading that in the future.

I also just like the title of the move. It perfectly fits what the movie is all about. If you haven't seen it, watch it.

I never watch movies twice, but I'd watch this one again on a rainy Saturday.

Brothers

We watched Brothers the other night and it was soooo good. We both liked it. Chris would have liked for it to have ended differently but he's weird.
I knew I wanted to see it as soon as it came out, but Chris wasn't so into it. That's okay, I waited patiently and as soon as it was in the Redbox, I was there.

There was more of a story about the war in it than I expected, and some parts were hard to watch, but it made the story even better.

And the little girls in the movie? They were so stinkin' cute and I thought they were great little actresses!

Precious. Or Not.

A few weeks ago Chris and I watched Precious. You know, after it didn't win best picture? I'm sorry but neither one of us liked it. Boo Hoo. This blog is about nothing but my opinion so take it with a grain of salt.
Now, everyone who knows me, knows I much prefer to read the book than watch the movie. Well my only question is, how in the heck is this book written? I couldn't even understand her 85% of the movie! Yes, I realize that's supposed to be part of the whole deal but really? Open your freakin mouth when you talk. Anyway, I doubt I'll ever read the book.

Chris and I are still trying figure out how the movie was supposed to be "uplifting". Yes, she finally gets out of the situation, but only in the last 30 seconds of the movie. The rest of it is depressing and just gross.

Of course, I know this is real life for some people, I just can't help but feel like Oprah only backed it because...well you know where I'm going with this. I better stop here.

There is one thing I enjoyed about the movie. Nurse John who was played by Lenny Kravitz.

No way would I watch it again.

Movie Review

One day last week, while Chris was at work, I finally got around to watching Julie & Julia.
I wish I would have written this post a little sooner than now because I've already forgotten some of the things I wanted to say about it.

I've always had a fascination with Julia Child, so it was neat getting to see her personality via Meryl Streep. She was hilarious...On the other hand, I don't really care for Amy Adams, but in this movie, I sort of forgot who she really was. Doesn't that mean she did a good job acting then? I don't know, whatever. Just don't expect me (or Chris) to rush to her next movie.

I was kind of bummed that Meryl and Amy never shared the screen. I was hoping for at least a phone call between them at the end of the movie.

It was better than I though it would be. I didn't think Chris would have liked it, but after watching it I decided he would have been able to sit through it. The young couple, Julie and Eric, totally reminded me of Chris and I.

There were a couple of scenes that made me laugh out loud because it reminded me of us. The first was when Eric and Julie were sitting on the couch watching SNL and laughing at the Julia Child skit. Chris and I watch SNL every week and I don't know anyone else who does. In fact, we've been made fun of. It's actually better now than it was a few years ago.

The other scene that reminded me of Chris and I was when Julie and Eric were having an argument and Eric yelled, "Do not write about this in your blog!" Julie said, "About what!?" Eric replied, "This fight!"

I busted out laughing because it sounds like something Chris would say to me. He thinks I blog about everything. Psh. What does he know? He should read it if he's worried! Right?

Anyway, that's my "review" or whatever you want to call it. I don't ever watch movies twice, but I'd watch this one again with Chris.

Paper Heart

Chris and I rented Paper Heart the other night. I had this stupid smile on my face the whole time watching it. Chris fell asleep. It was chemo week (and late one night) though so he's forgiven. And just so you know I don't think Chris has ever fallen asleep during a movie. Ever.

So, basically the movie is a documentary about finding love. I thought it was cute. Definitely different. Plus, Chris and I like anything, except Year One, with Michael Cera in it.

I can't really say too much else about it without telling the whole story so you should just watch it.

Don't Watch

Ok, so Chris and I rented Paranormal Activity last night. Mistake. I'll, er, we'll both admit we were scared shitless. It's funny because my brother, Tyler who is 15, was telling me about it and how it freaked him out...he told us we needed to see it.

Misery loves company.

Seriously, neither of us slept last night. I can't think of any other movie that's messed with my mind like this one did. Haha! I don't know if it was a true story or anything (Chris did a little research and he said it was all fake) but it doesn't even matter! The damage was done.

Don't watch it. Unless you want to be scared out of your mind.
